Then get yourself to The Iron Horse Taproom!
This year, during the Caps’ Run to the Stanley Cup, IHTR is holding their first ever “What Can FU Do?” fundraiser for our own favorite charitable organization, Children’s National Medical Center.
Every week participants will shave down into a Fu Manchu to support both the Caps’ continued glory AND helping sick Kids get well. Grower mugshots are taken every week, and the fundraising continues until the Caps win the Cup! (Or don’t…)

Hey Gang!!!
We’re putting ourselves out there in a whole lotta ways in the New Year…The good folks at Washington, D.C.’s NPR affiliate followed us around this Growing Season, and their own Ginger Moored reported on this year’s ‘Stache Bash. You can hear the whole piece here. The Mustaches for Kids gospel spreads like the edgehairs on a chevron-style ‘Stache…that is to say wide and strong!!!
January 2nd, 2010
That…was…AWESOME!!! You all helped to raise over $40,000 to help sick kids get well, after all donations were present and accounted for…Thank you and GREAT job to everyone! PayPal and checks are still being accepted if any donors out there didn’t get their money in in time for the Bash.
Last Thursday’s ‘Stache Bash was incredible!!! All our ‘Staches were in rare form,
and the throngs of supporters who came out lent their very vocal support to our not-so-shy ‘Staches all night long. In the end only one ‘Stache could triumph, however…and this year it was once again Spanky M. (AKA Napoleon Dynamite’s brother Kip, on the left in this picture, with Uncle Rico AKA ‘Stache AJ B.) who also won our inaugural Sweetest ‘Stache competition back in 2006! Spanky also raised over $4,250 for Children’s National Medical Center!!!
But the Awards didn’t stop there…oh no.
Who beat Spanky, for Most Fundraisingest ‘Stache you ask? None other than our illustrious, and now speechless (’Stache-less?) Emcee Jacques A.!!! Jacques brought in over $4,500 for Children’s!!! That smug look comes only from the ‘Stachifaction of having bested all your competitors…Way to go Jacques!!!
After much debate, and even a dance off to settle it, ‘Stache Phil M. walked out with the Creepiest ‘Stache award for his portrayal of an FBI sketch artist’s interpretation of what Ted Kaczynski would have looked like if he had had a beard trimmer up in that cabin in Montana…We don’t think Phil’s gotten out of character yet.
2009 also saw the debut of a new award…
Most Voluptuous ‘Stache, which most deservedly went to ‘Stache Alex B. for his protrayal of a Russian tarot card reader and fortune teller…where are those crystal balls again Alex? Oh right…right…
A good time had by all. And we would especially like to thank our first ever sponsor, The Art of Shaving, and their rockin’ General Manager, Enrique!!! Thanks for keeping our non-’Stached faces looking good all season, Enrique!!!
What else can we say? Thanks to everyone who made this yet-again record setting Growing Season a reality. See you again in 2010 for year 5 of Mustaches for Kids in the District, and year 5 of helping Kids get well!!!

Our Mustache couldn’t sleep last night it was so excited. The old tickle broom is so ready to strut its stuff all over the stage at RFD. But it won’t be the same if you’re not there. So make sure as ‘Stache
you’re at RFD TONIGHT at 730PM for the MMA (Mustache Martial Arts ) competition that is the 2009 ‘Stache Bash. Bring yourself, your friends, your coworkers, your mortal and sworn enemies. It would really pluck our plumage if you didn’t show.
As alluded to in previous postings and emails, the event tonight is pretty much a creepy beauty pageant (is that redundant?). But do normal pageant contestants compete to retain the most Guinness foam in their liphair? NO. Do normal pageant contestants get poked and prodded, the fluffiness of their hair so to test? NO. Do normal pageant contestants stare each other down in a final effort to will the other ‘Stache…er…contestant into submission and claim their title? HELL NO, but the Sweetest ‘Stache competition isn’t a normal pageant…it’s better.
But amidst all the fun, lets keep some perspective. Tonight’s ‘Stache Bash, and the money it raises, benefits Children’s National Medical Center and the excellent work they do helping sick Kids get well. Please come help us make our 4th Growing Season a success and support the work of CNMC!!!
December 10th, 2009

First, please take a second to reflect on the impact that Children’s National Medical Center has had on the life of Angello Gant, who underwent his first openheart surgery at 7 days of age:
“When Angello was born on July 18, 2003, we had no idea there were any health complications, especially having undergone several sonograms during pregnancy. Shortly after his delivery, we were informed by the nursery that he was “turning blue” and that his oxygen readings were dangerously low. Through the blur of emotions and questions, we felt completely helpless and terrified. After a few hours, the staff at our local hospital decided to rush Angello to Children’s Hospital so that he could get the appropriate emergency medical care. We were numb; not only was our baby suffering many medical challenges that we did not understand, but now he was being taken from us to another location.
The next day at Children’s, many members of the staff, including nurses, surgeons, and social workers, took time to explain his complex condition. Angello was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a cleft palate, and a non-functioning left kidney. With his heart condition we were given three choices — await a heart transplant; have Angello undergo a three-part surgical repair; or take him home and make him comfortable in his last hours. We were told that awaiting a heart transplant was long and arduous, not always resulting in a positive outcome. The professionals gave us the facts, statistics, and information to make our best choice.
We opted for surgery. Angello had his first open heart repair at 7 days of age. He had his second when he was 8 months old. The third and final repair occurred in August of 2005 when Angello was 2. With each procedure came many complications but always hope.
Our young son has endured approximately 10 heart catheriterizations, a cleft palate repair, feeding tube procedures, and many other non-invasive medical treatments, in addition to three open heart surgeries.
One underlying theme recurred through all our “dark days” (as they became known to us) — how utterly fortunate were we that we lived so close to this amazing medical facility, Children’s Hospital. In my humble opinion, the surgeons and doctors are brilliant, the nurses so knowledgeable, and the social work staff are just incredible. They all played key roles in saving Angello’s life.
Other staff members like the cashier in the cafeteria, or the receptionist at the front desk, seemed to recognize we were downright beat up and exhausted from this situation and would give a kind smile or gentle encouragement.
Children’s Hospital has given us the greatest gift and we are honored to tell Angello’s story. He is truly a miracle child and brings great happiness to anyone in his path of life.”
For the sake of many more Kids just like Angello, please make a donation to Children’s National Medical Center and M4KDC by clicking on the PayPal link to the right, and attending the ‘Stache Bash on Thursday 12/10 at RFD in Chinatown!!!
Now here’s the group shot we promised you from Checkpoint #3…over 20 Growers attended. ‘Stache loneliness averted!!!

December 8th, 2009
Hello everyone!
Tonight the crew at M4KDC is hosting the 3rd Checkpoint of the Mustache Season. We will be rolling by Fado Bar in Chinatown around 6:30PM for good times, your company,
and a satisfying knowledge that just by being together, we are helping the Kids…well being together and raising copious amounts of cash to help the Kids get better.
Don’t end up like 2008 Sweetest ‘Stache Dave Tootle and show up late. The gang had to uncross his ’Stache after that one.
See ya there!!!

Here’s why we love Mustaches…blissfully perfect ending to an episode of TPC…

Mustache Pain on The People’s Court
December 1st, 2009
Hello Gang,
Once again, we thought it would be a good idea to give everyone a sense of perspective on all the silliness that our endeavor engenders. We do do this for a reason after all. We were never ones to grow a purely wanton Mustache. To this end, please see the below story of Amanda Merrell, written by her mother, Suzanne.
Remember, we are all helping Kids just like Amanda to get well. Please, redouble your Donating/Fundraising efforts to help us reach our goal of $60,000 for Children’s!!!
Amanda Merrell
“Back in 2004, our Independence Day festivities had to be cut short. Our little girl, Amanda, had a small lump on her leg. She was taken to Children’s National Medical Center for a routine X-ray. When we later received a call from the doctor, we knew it wasn’t good news.
It was clear that Amanda had bone cancer, but a biopsy was needed to determine what kind and how to treat it. Initially, she was thought to have osteosarcoma, but tests revealed that it was a much more dangerous and rare type of cancer for a child so young. Amanda had Ewing’s sarcoma, which left only one option for treatment. She would not only have to endure some of the most difficult chemotherapy offered, Amanda would need to have her leg amputated.
Today, Amanda is out of the hospital, has completed kindergarten, and is doing remarkably well. Thanks to Amanda’s new prosthetic leg, her family can barely keep up with her.”
Says Amanda, “I had cancer. Now, thanks to Children’s National, I have a really cool robot leg that helps me walk. Everyone in my class wishes they had a robot leg, too!””

Dear All Lovers of Mustaches and Charity,
Sooooo, we just want to apologize to anyone out there who was super psyched to come to Checkpoint 2 and was put off by the fact that the bar we chose for the gathering of ‘Staches and Friends, is in fact closed on Tuesdays. Ha! Our bad. We ended up across the street at The Blaguard, but I think the group really felt the absence of our Brothers and Sisters in the ‘Stache.
But on to more felicitous occurrences. ‘Stache-giving has come and gone once again…Uncle Blackheart didn’t give us any money this year, but but we did learn a valuable lesson: Don’t use your “soup strainer” as a soup strainer. The mess and mental scars it causes are not worth the gurgles of glee you get for 2 minutes before your mom comes back into the room.
How much did our ‘Stacheketeers raise while making the trip back to the old homestead? How much did our Sympathizers donate? How close are we to our goal of $60,000 for the Kiddos at Children’s? Let us hear from you!!!
This week’s Checkpoint #3 is back at Fado…see you there!!!
